I found a parable that captures this key word ‘unjust’ in a very intriguing way. This story relates to the unjust manager who was a shrewd and manipulative person. He was self-seeking and had no moral code of justice to guide him. He was very dishonest to his master. This man shows us what a bad role model looks like. When he was found out for his trickery, he deserved all the punishment that was due to him. But what did he do? Read the full story in Luke 16:1-12.
Justice, equality, rights and ‘my choice’, ‘my freedom’, ‘my life’ – all pose as bright, illuminous lights in this day and age. Whose rights, whose privileges, whose freedom? Where does morality fit into all this? The laws of nature and the law of the jungle are pretty clear-cut. Yet, when it comes to mankind, a big dilemma emerges.
If we say that man is a social being, then a code of conduct should follow social interactions. My grandfather also said, “My handshake is my bond.” That’s what was honoured and kept only a few decades ago. Today, with all our technological advancements, it’s a far cry from those days! Deception is everywhere and it is so blatant.
It seems like justice has been turned upside down – the wrongdoers get pardoned and the people in the right get reprimanded. So have we advanced in society? Do we do the right thing? In 1 John 3:21 it says, “If our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence towards God.” Furthermore, in Isaiah 48:22 we read, “There is no peace”, says the Lord, “for the wicked.”
What stance do you take in an unjust system? Does your claim to your rights impinge on the rights of other fellowmen? Do the actions you take result in making your society and the world at large a better place? Look in the mirror before you even dare to think further.
So, what do you do in difficult situations? Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a way that seems right to man, but it’s end is the way of death.” Remember that whatever you do, your deeds will find you out some time or the other. When you exit this world, would they say, “He was a just man and a good role model”? ◊
